John Barsness started publishing outdoor articles over 30 years ago. He's written about fishing and Western history in addition to sporting firearms and hunting. His stories have appeared in every major outdoor magazine, including FIELD & STREAM, OUTDOOR LIFE, SPORTS AFIELD, FLY FISHERMAN and GRAY'S SPORTING JOURNAL where he also served as editor. He has also written for more general-interest magazines, including BIG SKY JOURNAL, NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC and SPORTS ILLUSTRATED. Presently he's a staff writer for RIFLE, HANDLOADER and SUCCESSFUL HUNTER, and has also published seven books on subjects from flyfishing to hunting optics.  Barsness still lives in his native Montana, an hour from where he was born and raised, with his wife Eileen Clarke (also a writer) and a bird dog. In addition to Montana, he's hunted in about a third of the United States from Alaska to Florida, plus Canada, Mexico, South America, Europe and Africa. He has more rifles than he needs but not as many as he wants.

Craig Boddington, a veteran of 55 African safaris, was born and raised in Kansas, where his early big-game experience, in the mid-1960's, included pronghorn and mule deer in Wyoming, whitetail and mule deer in Kansas, and mule deer in Colorado.  When not involved with hunting and shooting, much of his early years were spent in Boy Scout activities.  At 14 he became an Eagle Scout, at 16 received a Silver Palm on his Eagle, and at 17 was the youngest person to become Activities Director at his regional Boy Scout camp.  A member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity, he attended the University of Kansas on an NROTC scholarship, graduating with an English degree and a regular commission in the United States Marine Corps.  His outdoor writing career began in college and continued while on active duty.  After leaving active service in 1978 Boddington worked as a hunting consultant/booking agent for International Hunting Consultants based in Santa Monica.  In 1979 he joined Petersen Publishing Company, where he served as Associate Editor, GUNS & AMMO magazine;  Editor, GUNS & AMMO Specialty Publications;  Executive Editor, Petersen's HUNTING Magazine;  and from 1983 to 1994 Editor of Petersen's HUNTING Magazine.  His current position with  Primedia (former Petersen's) is Executive Field Editor Pimedia Outdoor Group, including GUNS & AMMO, Petersen's HUNTING, and RIFLESHOOTER.  He also serves as Director of Outdoor Business Development for SureFire.Craig has published in excess of 2500 magazine articles published and authored 18 books on hunting and shooting.

Dave Campbell

Shooting Illustrated Editor in Chief Dave Campbell brings more than three decades of hunting and shooting experience to the job. He is an award-winning author with hundreds of articles published world wide. He has hunted throughout North America from the Arctic to Sonoran deserts, Europe and Africa. Campbell started freelance writing in 1995 and had an outdoor radio show in Fresno, California for two years. In 1997 he took the Hunting Editor position at Western Outdoor News, a southern California weekly hunting and fishing newspaper. Two years later he joined the staff of Petersen’s HUNTING as an associate editor.
An unrepentant gypsy, Campbell spent most of his adult life living throughout the western United States doing everything from fur trapping and gunsmithing to being a police officer in a small Wyoming town. Today, when he isn’t in the throes of shipping a magazine or hunting, Campbell spends his time practicing photography and collecting Native American and Western art memorabilia, and antiques.




John Haviland

John Haviland was born and raised in Montana and currently lives in Missoula.  He has been writing about the outdoors, hunting and shooting since 1987 for a variety of magazines from Boys' Life to Outdoor Life.  He is currently a contributing editor to GUN DIGEST, GUNHUNTER, VARMINT HUNTER, RIFLE, HANDLOADER and SUCCESSFUL HUNTER magazines.

John has been a handloadeder since he was a teenager, experiementing with a wide variety of handgun, rifle and shotgun cartridges.  His favorite metallic cartridges shoot well with cast lead alloy bullets which John uses extensively for practice and hunting.  John has hunted from Alaska to Alabama and from Quebec to Mexico for game from grizzly bears and mountain goats to quail and turkeys.  His favorite game to hunt has always been blue grouse during the first days of fall and elk with winter's first snow.

John's wife, Gail, and their three sons like all the shooting sports and pursue birds to big game.


Richard Mann

Richard was born and raised in the West Virginia hills by parents who encouraged adventure at an early age.  He literally grew up in the woods and has always been involved in some facet of hunting, shooting or fishing either as an obsessed participant or observer.  Richard has chased coon hounds until daylight, waited out whitetails perched high in an oak, canoed the New River and chased big game animals from the Montana Mountains to the Green Hills of Africa.  With all the snake catching, woods roaming and river running it is a wonder his parents remain sane.During service in the Army, later as a municipal police officer and most recently as a railroad detective Richard obtained numerous certifications in small arms instruction.  He has trained many military personnel, law enforcement officers and civilians in the application of firearms for defensive, competitive and recreational use.  Richard won the West Virginia Governor’s Twenty Award for law enforcement, the West Virginia National Guard State Pistol Competition and earned his Distinguished Medal with pistol.  Richard is recognized for his practical approach to the realistic employment of firearms and related techniques.With his badge turned in Richard now writes for a variety of magazines and has had hundreds of articles published in various outdoors and firearms periodicals.  Richard has patents pending on a riflescope reticle for hunters and revolutionary bullet testing media.  Richard is a true product of the Appalachians and a hillbilly at heart.  He still lives in West Virginia with the most understanding wife in the world, their four kids and two dogs. www.ramworks.net



Ron grew up in rural SD and began hunting with sticks and stones at age seven.  He graduated to Grandpa's .410 at 13, began handloading in high school and  began writing and selling articles and pictures in 1976.  Since then Ron has been published in more than 100 magazines plus books, brochures and national advertising campaigns. Ron Has hunted big and small game on six continents, taking everything from varmints to water buffalo, eland, moose with a variety of handloads and bullets. Ron tries to experiment with new cartridges/rifles every year, paying particular attention to bullet performance.  He began trapping and shooting foxes and coyotes in his teens, using fur money to fund a bachelor’s degree, making Ron especially sensitive to pelt damage. Ron is the Rifles Editor at Sporting Classics; Travel Editor at Sports Afield; Technical Editor at Rifle, Handloader and Successful Hunter; Field Editor at American Hunter; contributor at Gun Hunter. His work also appears in Ducks Unlimited, Outdoor Life, Pheasants Forever and many other national and regional magazines. Ron Spomer has authored six books on wildlife and hunting.

Bryce M. Towsley is an award-winning writer and photographer whose work covers a wide diversity of subjects, but none more than the field of hunting and the firearms used for that sport.  Towsley published his first article in 1980 and in the past two and a half decades has published hundreds of articles and thousands of photos in most of the major outdoor and gun magazines. He has also published five books on guns, gunsmithing and hunting and contributed to several other books including several on handloading.Towsley is a field editor for NRA American Rifleman and American Hunter magazines; reloading columnist for NRA Shooting Illustrated magazine; Modern Rifles & Handgun Editor for Buckmasters magazine; Muzzle Loader Columnist for Petersen's Hunting magazine and the "Ask The Expert" Columnist for Gun List Magazine.Towsley is an unrepentant gun buff and handloader. He has built his own rifles and has created several wildcat cartridges. He is an avid hunter with more than 40 years of experience with all types of hunting firearms as well as archery.
